I like to have a written script, but I'm totally open to change if it will benefit the movie. Nothing is written in stone. I improvise, but it is controlled improvisation; I give my actors a lot of freedom to bring their own ideas to the table, but only if it benefits the movie. Communication (of your vision and what it is you are trying to do) is one of the director's greatest tools. My actors must completely understand my vision in order to give me what I want.
I never think of the camera until my actors are ready.

You mean you don't know already? ;-)
It's very difficult question. Creative meets Techie with time for High Art and time to think about Product and a push for innovation in all areas.
What do you mean, Cameron recycles shots!?

I don't call myself a director because as yet, I have not made anything which I want claim my name and status upon, but if I were to be defined and boxed and catagorised, it would be 'undefined' because with what I do, some of it is premeditated whilst the other is left to the element of chance, surprise and then maybe innovation.

Not enough experience under my belt to know HOW I work. But I know where I'm drawn towards....
Kubrick... too cold and calculating
The Coen Bros... too clever
Tarrantino... too violent & `cool`
Spielberg... too much big business
Woo.... too samey same slow mo ultraviolence
Scorsese.... nah just doesn't do it for me
Lucas... every time I think of StarWars I remember American Graffitti and realise whatever magic made starwars.... it sure wasn't lucas!
Me... well I'm trying to be a gutrall director, making films which explore excentric visions in sensitive and emotional ways. I'm not into art films or experimentation but I will pursue my vision irrespective of whatever rules others may hold dear. Whatever gives me the effect I want.
role-models for me: Lynch, Wenders, `What Dreams May Come`, `Memento`, `Days of Heaven`, Sajit Ray, Mike Leigh, Ren & Stimpy, `The Puppetmaster` and alot of Chinese and World Cinema.
Great Films, for me, have a wonderful overall look/feel and from there they often lead us, gently or savagely, into deep psychological worlds.

If your talking about what kind of director in terms of what kinds of films do you make / direct, and what if any motifs keep recurring that could help define your visual style, then for me I'd say, I'm a compassionate, emotional and psychological director.
In terms of how I do what I do as a director then, I try to be an actors director.
But generally I think it takes you a while to find your own style, more than just a couple of shorts, so I might be totally different this time next year, then again I might not.
